Why was I born to my parents? How can I free myself from them?

Choosing to be yourself

Life holds out a kind of invitation, an unconscious invitation, inviting you to play a game, as it were, and as a person plays this game he becomes more broad-minded, more mature and better adjusted.

By daring to play you are given a chance in life. I could say, “Life is a game of chance,” – as a play on words – but then I’d have to say, “No, it’s not like that.” Because you come into situations you haven’t been able to choose for yourself. This is due to the fact you weren’t conscious enough. If you end up in a certain situation against your liking, this implies you didn’t dare to play, didn’t dare enough to play, weren’t open enough for all possible situations.

Then you may be made to walk a certain road you don’t wish to take. Yet you’ve been brought there to learn something, to learn how to escape from it, and to be able to say, “Now it’s finished, now I’ve had enough, now I am going to determine my life.”

You may be made to walk a certain road you don’t wish to take. Yet you’ve been brought there to learn something, to learn how to escape from it.

If you look at it this way, you can discover what a load of excess baggage you’ve taken upon your shoulders, baggage from which you must now break away.

Many times life involves a kind of escaping from something, fighting for your freedom, choosing to be yourself. This isn’t easy and can’t be done quickly. There are people who need lifetimes to do this.

Many times life involves a kind of escaping from something, fighting for your freedom, choosing to be yourself.

Dare more

You start off with a very restricted life and, eventually, playfully, because you’ve tried everything and tried to explore all directions, you keep learning so much from what is offered you: this is possible and that too.

People should dare more. They are busy going down a certain road and don’t dare to explore any byways for fear of what will happen to them. Life itself is such a byway.

A byway can seem a bit daunting but if you decide to take it you’ll be able to conclude it offers you many more possibilities. As I find my own freedom, as I gradually break myself loose from others, as I determine the kind of life I want for myself, then my position will change, then I will choose my parents myself whereas otherwise the situation is one of “I must still do this and that. The game wasn’t over yet, I couldn’t get the hang of it, I still have things to learn.”

This is then not just a little while; on this Earth it can be twenty, thirty, forty, fifty years or perhaps a whole lifetime. People are caught like this, unable to find a way out. The horoscope reveals this. A person is born under a certain constellation with certain effects he has to undergo.

The horoscope reveals this. A person is born under a certain constellation with certain effects he has to undergo.

Another kind of life

But at a certain moment a person discovers a totally other kind of life is also possible, one in which he, himself, takes the decisions, makes the choices.

This is what I would like for you. As quickly as possible, I would like you to discover what gives you freedom – but then real freedom – what gives you real life.

I would like you to put those things that determined you, and are still determining you, behind you; but then I want you to turn around and, with a freedom and completely different outlook, dare to face those same people who determined you. From out of this freedom, I want you to begin living in a totally other way with these same people who will no longer determine you, nor have the ability to determine your life.

They will ask themselves, “Hey, what’s happened to him or her, to my child, for instance?” They won’t be able to understand, but will have to accept it.

From out of this freedom, I want you to begin living in a totally other way with these same people who will no longer determine you.

The ultimate result is freedom

It will be good for them to see how someone has managed to gain freedom in their life and they’ll be able to learn from this how, they too, could attain freedom. Otherwise they will again be born in the same situation, for a person can’t fly if they’ve never learned how to fly, nor can they walk without ever having learned how to walk.

It’s the same with lives. You take the point you have reached in this life along with you to the next life and then return to that same point. It may take ten, twenty, thirty years, but you will reach the same point where you left off in your last life. Only then can you go beyond it, you again take up the struggle in order to move ahead.

Therefore, it’s important to examine yourself, always following the same principle: “Who am I, what am I doing, where is it leading to?” Ask yourself these questions and dare to ask, “This ‘I’, who is this ‘I’, and what is freedom and where will it bring me?” If you can do all this, you will surely be released from your own present situation.

Ask yourself: “Who am I, what am I doing, where is it leading to? What is freedom and where will it bring me?”

The ultimate result is freedom. Not at first, not even at the beginning of life, for when you are born you still have to manage to break free of your parents.

Some people are in a position to be freed of their parents very early on in life, because of circumstances – or so it appears – but it may well be one of your parents dies to allow you a freedom you earned in another life. A parent may also stay with you to lead you to freedom. All kinds of combinations are possible. Each situation has to be looked at independently and one can never generalize about such things.

You can learn to understand that life is an urge to freedom, an urge to go forward, an urge to become expansive. This is true for everyone, but sometimes it calls for daring and if a person lacks this daring they are inhibited – one, two, three, four, or even thousands of lives long. This is then a sad situation and a distressing situation for someone to be in, and yet it’s reality.

When a person learns, studies, questions, he attains freedom.

Evil forces exist

When a person learns, studies, questions, he attains freedom. When a person is forced not to learn, not to study, not to question, an automation is at work, something driving him towards his misfortune, because this, too, is possible. These forces exist.

It’s a constant battle between one and the other. There are forces engaged in trying to use their own power against others, and they do so at their own risk because by doing this they come into a life of what we call ‘bad karma’. They restrict others as much as they can and therefore they, themselves, become restricted. This is the basis of evil. Everything is possible on this Earth.

It’s quite possible to choose to live a life of restriction. The element of darkness, the element of force that lives by itself and only for itself, can exist on this Earth. It’s like a maelstrom dragging others along in its current, with the aim of preventing them from becoming themselves.

Evil forces have the aim of preventing others from becoming themselves.

So be on your guard. When you meet with these forces in life, fight the battle, resist and wrest yourself free. In every instance you gain freedom you can be sure you’ve made the right choice, but it must be a genuine freedom, one gained by a fair and honest fight."

Where is my freedom?

Antithesis

When you see a certain form, say for example a football team, you should be able to see what it is made of. It will be made up of certain powers, but of antithetical powers. There are constructive powers that work to hold the team together and destructive powers that want to break the team up. And this happens continuously. There are always reasons to keep things united, to keep things functioning and there are always reasons to cause division, to stir things up and cause them to go wrong.

So what can you see? What can you choose? If you yourself are a member of the team, what are you going to choose, what action are you going to take and with which powers?

There are always reasons to keep things united, to keep things functioning and there are always reasons to cause division, to stir things up and cause them to go wrong.

This is only an example but life, too, is like this. Everyday life has the same antithesis. It is not a matter of an apple or a rotten apple. No, the antithesis is in the one and also in the other – always.

Your freedom is here

If you have a bad experience with something, be aware that that something also has its antithesis. A bad experience stimulates you in the end to say, “No more of this!” or to say, “Go on with it, there’s something to this, I started it and I can go on. It makes me feel bad or others will feel bad but it gives me pleasure that others feel bad.” All this is possible.

The antithesis is everywhere but you must dare to look at it.

So you see the antithesis is everywhere but you must dare to look at it. It is also in yourself, but again, you must dare to look at it. If you can, you will be much more conscious and then your actions will be much more profound due to a better, more correct choice.

So which powers you summon depends on you. You must choose them, you must call on them, you must want them. Here is where your choice lies, your freedom; this is how you are able to create your life.

The things you do in life and the choices you make do make a difference. One movie is not like another, one book is not the same as another, each person you meet is unique and not like another and so on and so on. Everything is a thing apart, unlike another, but are you able to see this? In order to see this you must look at everything in depth."

The things you do in life and the choices you make do make a difference.

What should I find within myself?

Find your central idea

(...) if you are open you can approach the deepness of your own life and learn to live with this deepness. This means: In the profound depth of your being there lies a certain idea which is very pure, which is brilliant, wonderful, fantastic, call it a pearl, a treasure...

If you can find this pearl – this one idea which is the pivot of your existence – all the other ideas will organise themselves around it, and it’s crucial you find this pearl. Because this pearl of Divinity within you – and that is different for everyone – is your central idea around which the other ideas fit themselves.

If you can find the one central idea which is the pivot of your existence, all the other ideas will organise themselves around it.

When you fail to find this central idea you experience a kind of addiction, a kind of drug addiction you could say, because without it you are busy in this stream, totally absorbed in it, and whether you find this to be pleasant or not, you are caught up in a movement making you dart from one thing to another. Some people are always straying in this way.

Breath and freedom

These mental constructions should organise themselves around one central idea. This idea is then very important for it will determine the significance of your life. It will give your life a purpose and one purpose is, of course, unlike another.

If, for instance, you find your central idea is ‘love’, then your life will evidently be different than if your central idea would be ‘breathing’ or ‘running’ or any other idea around which you could organise your life.

One purpose is, of course, unlike another.

Breathing is often a lack of freedom making itself heard. Some people find it difficult to breathe. Asthma speaks of this lack of freedom. When people have difficulty breathing they are concerned with their breath almost all the time and almost all the time with freedom. Their freedom is so limited they don’t know how to get through life and they keep thinking, “How can I live my life?” without paying attention to their own ideas.

Some people find it difficult to breathe. This is often a lack of freedom making itself heard.

If they would be attentive to their own ideas they would notice how restricted their lives are and if they would then make changes in their lives, their breathing would become freer, their asthma would improve and they would have taken steps in their growth of consciousness. These are all components of the selfsame thing gathering themselves around a certain central idea.

A brief reflection: one central idea

What is your central idea? I don’t expect you to decide this quickly right at this moment. But have the courage to ask yourself the question, “What is central to my life?”

What is your central idea?
