Meditation exercice for groups

Training the mind to handle light and vision

Meditation

An exercice to try with your group

I would like to give you an exercise to try out in a group, for when you get together with others around a spiritual theme, around this book for instance. The exercise is simply this: that before you take leave of one another you shut your eyes and try to visualize all the people who are present. What you know about them is what you know. How you see them, is how you see them. If you find you can’t visualize them, then don’t make any special effort to do so.

Before you take leave of one another, shut your eyes and try to visualize all the people who are present.

Observe each other

I would like you first to take ten minutes to try to observe each other and try to become aware of the inner things that are present. Don’t be surprised when people look at you, just let them. They have nothing against you. The purpose is not to go home with a whole bunch of information about who the others are, just try to form an image of the other person within yourself.

The purpose is not to go home with a whole bunch of information about who the others are, just try to form an image of the other person within yourself.

If you don’t succeed the first time, try again. If you can do this without looking at the other person, so much the better, because that means you’ve managed to grasp a hold of the image. Do this in a simple, calm and quiet way.

Try it, it calls for only a little effort on your part, don’t make a big work out it, it should almost go by itself. If you find you can’t manage it, then just let it go. It’s not really so important.

When you are home and think of the other

I would just like you to try it, because later, when you get home and think of someone, it may be that then an image of the other comes to you and I would like to do something with that.

I would like that through the image of the other person that comes up in you, you become aware of whom you are. For it is through the other that you will realize who you are. This is what I will add. I will help you to understand who you are through your interaction with your fellow man and woman.

Through the other you will realize who you are - this is what I will add.

I am turning things around now, instead of your going to the outside world with yourself, you are bringing the outside world to within yourself, and thereby you will be receiving another energy.

I will be guiding the image

I mean by this that your mind can change, for I will place another energy there. Namely, I will be guiding the image with a certain radiance, which I shall take from within Myself and place on that image. You won’t see this; you won’t notice it.

The purpose is that you discover yourself as you really are. You won’t get a feeling of this immediately. I’ve said it and I’ll say it again: you won’t be able to see the result but, nevertheless, it will be there; and you will find the realms of possibilities in your mind greatly increasing.

You won’t get a feeling of this immediately, you won’t be able to see the result but it will be there.

It's not about your emotions

So do this for a while, as I’ve explained it, but don’t make a big affair out of it. If you can’t keep from bursting out in laughter, do so, it’s okay. If you think you should remain serious about it, that’s okay too.

Everything concerning emotions here is beside the point. The point is that the mind should be trained to deal with light and vision, and what your emotions convey to you about it is of no importance. Even if it goes against your feelings, it all doesn’t matter. What matters is that you try doing it in a neutral, normal and spontaneous manner. ”
